Andrea Edginton was tepid about teaching when her academic career began six years ago. She had gained scant lecture experience in her PhD program and was annoyed by students who showed little motivation in class. On joining the University of Waterloo’s school of pharmacy, where 40 percent of her time would be spent teaching, she wondered a little guiltily: “How can I get out of the classroom?”

Today, the newly tenured associate professor laughs to revisit the situation that ultimately led her to pioneer a course in a teaching style known as blended learning. Blended learning, in a nutshell, combines online and in-class components that allow students many ways to engage with a topic.
